Her leadership skills led her to serve as the Secretary of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in 1995 and as its President in 1996.

In 2007, Rekha Gupta was elected as a councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) and chaired the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). She was re-elected in 2012 from North Pitampura (Ward 54).
